Matthew 17:20
Matthew 17:20 New International Version (NIV)
20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
A friend of mine posted this verse on Facebook earlier this week. It truly spoke to me, mostly because I feel like I’m facing one of the biggest mountains in my life. I’ve been thinking, stressing, and worrying over this “mountain.” And although I know deep in my soul that God has it and that prayer will help me overcome it, I still lose faith when that worry creeps in.
I did a little digging to get a better understanding of this verse. First I read the entire chapter and the meaning of this chapter from Bible.org. I also referenced both of my study bibles and respective notes. From The Study Bible for Women, the notes read: “17:14-23 A mustard seed was the smallest seed known in that region. Because the time was near when Jesus would no longer be with them physically, the disciples’ needed to exercise their faith more than ever. They would have to learn to depend solely on His unseen presence. Jesus reminded them again that He was about to be betrayed, killed, and on the third day, He would be raised up. The fact that the disciples were deeply distressed showed that the mustard seed of faith had yet to take root.”
What does that mean to you? What does it mean to me? Here’s my perspective and how I plan to implement Jesus’ instructions. I hope you will find it beneficial too if you’re facing your own mountains.
- Mountains refers to great difficulties. I need to acknowledge my difficulties and seek God’s Word for specific strategies to overcome them.
- Little faith means lack of quality faith not quantity faith. I need to work on the quality of my faith.
- Quality faith needs to be bathed in prayer. I need to pray daily and intensely. I need to fast. And I need to seek other scripture that will help me grow in prayer and in my relationship with God.
- Nothing will be impossible.
It will be interesting to see how God helps me “move this mountain.” I’ll keep you updated. And please comment if you want to share your story and/or have a prayer request.
